why am i showing you an african violet? well its because... i usually buy one... and its all blooming and pretty .. and then i take it home water and care for it and before it can bloom again.. i have killed it.. or it just NEVER blooms again ..
but this one.. this one has made my heart sing.. i have been waiting for it to be in full bloom to snap the pic.. i bought it cause i liked the way the purple was darker on the edges..and the yellow so yellow .. and it was pretty for a while.. i put it in my bathroom window.. and potted it in an african violet pot.. and what did i get rewarded wtih a few months later.. MORE blooms.. bigger and better than when i bought it.. i am just proud.. i can grow most anything but these things have been taunting me for years.. and now .. i finally got one to bloom again .. MAGIC!

Good for you-mine always died too. Mike's mother had the most amazing ones-a few were 15 years old.

CONGRATS, african violets are picky little creatures. They will only bloom when they are happy and you must have made her happy.
I have two blooming right now, first ever to live and bloom for me.

I have yet to succeed with african violets! My latest one gave up the ghost about a month ago... congrats to you!

wow! absolutely gorgeous! i can't keep those darn things alive either, but you have given me hope! i haven't tried here in Texas yet, so maybe...
My other nemesis? Orchids. I can keep a ficus going, but give me an orchid or african violet and they're dead whithin months.

They are about one of the only things I can grow.
I learned a few tips through the years, and listening to successful growers.
Keep them in your bathroom, don't pinch off the leaves or buds, don't touch them at all, or more will die. Always water from the bottom, it doesn't like water in the top of it. And keep it in a clay pot, tight, almost root bound, and when you transplant to a bigger pot, only slightly bigger. I had one that bloomed every month for 10 years. It finally died, but I think it was too old.
Have fun with it, it's beautiful.

Gorgeous colors for sure. I think the secret to African violets is watering them from the bottom and letting them soak it up. Also when I use that green liquid fertilizer stuff they keep flowering continually.

My Great Grandmother had the greenest thumb I have ever seen. She was wonderful with violets and they always bloomed for her. Mine always died! Your violet is gorgeous and gave me happy thoughts about my grandma! Thanks!
